Hyena
The hyenas in the known lands are known for being effective pirates. They attack coastal settlements and shipping with regularity. The hyenas are unwelcome in all the known countries and will be run off or attacked if spotted. On Ashstone hyenas are more tolerated yet still shunned and looked on with great suspicion. Even in Ashstone hyenas are very rare.
In their homeland, hyenas come from matriarchal clans and live in small villages. Nothing is known of their homeland in the known lands; there the hyenas are only known as pirates. There are rumours of pirate villages somewhere on the more remote islands, but none have yet been found. Hyena society both in the homeland and on ships is hierarchal and competition and conflict are common. Hyenas are viewed by outsiders as being greedy, gluttonous, devious, brutish, stupid, and dirty, yet powerful and dangerous.
The hyena homeland is arid, hot, and harsh. It is not known for producing resources nor products. Hyena homes tend to be excavated from the ground and have branches and thatch placed over as roofs.
The hyenas are not known to trade, neither as pirates nor in their homeland, which has caused other nearby lands to not care about them nor their lands. Hyenas are good hunters and trackers.
Hyenas tend to be bulky and muscular, with a well-developed upper body. They are not particularly agile. They have rounded ears, a shaggy, brown mane, and yellowish, spotted fur. Their tails are relatively short. Hyenas are smarter than they're given credit for.
