Relatively high areas in Ashstone mostly 'usable' (think favela). Poorer areas are either high or low; the low areas are prone to flooding and the highest areas are hard to get to.

In flood-prone areas buildings often built on piles. In the lagoon of the southern hook many families have taken to living on boats or floating homes, creating a network of floating platforms and bridges

The island is hilly and mountainous with fairly little flat land. Many 'streets' are more like staircases.
