Most societies are seafaring to some extent due to geography. The Wolves are landlocked but have their capital city on the shore of the large lake.
Map is ‘real’; PC maps would look era-appropriate. Expensive and hand drawn, some printed.
For navigation maps of the Isle, can number exits if cardinal directions aren't available (nne, up, in, etc)
The Isle and the neighbouring lands are prone to earthquakes and tropical storms. Storms usually hit the Rabbits, Squirrels, and Cats hardest. Island arcs and other places are prone to earthquakes. Some volcanoes exist. Tornadoes are quite rare but waterspouts aren't uncommon in the West Sea.
Hurricanes are rare and tend to come up from the southeast.
Southern areas have subtropical regions with some offshore islands being frost-free.
The city is temperate; warm and sometimes hot in summer, cool and sometimes snowy in winter. The mountains nearby are too rugged to farm or do much else with.
Geography of the Isle of Ashstone
The Isle is comprised of low-lying sandspits and flat to hilly land in west, then tallish cliffs in north around craters, along the southeast coast, and bits here and there. There are three islands adjacent to the Isle; the ones in the west and southeast hosts fortress as does the one off the southeast coast and one on the island to the north of the New Docks. There also is an island fort guarding the Old Harbour.
The sandspits are settled, but are prone to obliteration by storms.
Two promontories flank the city island.
The North Peninsula has hilly margins except in the east. Another large, round harbour also exists there.
The South Peninsula does not have as good a harbour but has an acceptable one. The South Peninsula has a ridge of volcanic rock dividing it into east and west portions. There are three islands off the peninsula, one low sandy one to the west and two rugged, rocky ones to the north.
The currents in the strait are powerful and tricky. The northern side of the strait has a cold water current flowing through it and the southern has a warm current. This conflux of streams parts around the main island which creates unpredictable fog and weather. These currents have created two long sandspits on the western side of the island. Between the sandspits is a large but relatively shallow harbour with a quay.
Maneuvering the many small and large ferries that traverse the straits is a profession that requires a lot of training. During slack tide is when the most ferries operate. They run day and night.
Despite these inconveniences, the ruling jackal family carefully selected this location due to its exceptional positioning on major trade routes, which in time they'd come to control most of.
